Fall Movie Guide 2009

Film lovers can expect another exciting season of film entertainment this Autumn, as such epics as The Founding a Republic and 2012 hit the silver screens. It seems like the disaster movie genre has been making a particularly big comeback this season, with at least three big budget American movies showing vivid depictions of a devastated post-apocalyptic planet Earth. Fans of vampire romance film Twilight will be happy to know that its sequel New Moon will be gracing the big screens from November onwards and with its beautiful cast largely unchanged. The autumn movie season will also see the release of films by some of the most talented film makers out there, including Wes Anderson, the Coen brothers, Guy Richie and Richard Kelly.

Expats and visitors to China hardly need reminding of the fact that this October marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic. This event has been affecting virtually every aspect of society, and the film industry here is no exception. The Founding of a Republic is the direct result of this historic event and is probably the most spoken about film to be shown in the mainland this year. Although many are skeptical that its portrayal of the Communist Party’s struggle against the Kuomintang may not be entirely neutral, especially given the fact that it was produced by the state-owned China Film Group, the film itself is definitely worth a trip to the cinema nonetheless. What is spectacular about this film is not only the fact that hundreds of China’s biggest names in film make cameo appearances, but the final budget only came to the incredibly meager sum of £6 million.

Another major highlight of this season’s movie guide is the return of Toy Story, but in 3D this time. Toy Story has accumulated millions of fans worldwide since the release of its original in 1995 and has since bowed to the predictable fate of most money making movies: a sequel. When news broke out of yet another Toy Story release, fans of the original obviously expressed some disgruntlement, especially for fear of it becoming a sell-out, like so many other films. However, Toy Story in 3D is the same movie as its original but with an extra dimension. Fans will have to wait until 2010 to either celebrate or spite a totally new story, when Toy Story 3 is released – but that’s for another season.

Wes Anderson’s The Fantastic Mr. Fox is another exciting movie to look out for this season. This stop motion animated film will be a visual feast, as impressive to adults as it will to kids. With a star studded cast including George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Bill Murray, this film is sure to be a major box office hit.

One of the most interesting films to come out this autumn is the adaptation of Jon Ronson’s ‘The Men Who Stare at Goats’. The book and film both explore the real-life use of new age concepts and paranormal military programmes by the US Army. Apparently a special top-secret wing in the US army has the means of training people to kill goats by merely staring at them. This film also features an incredible cast, including George Clooney, Ewan McGregor and Kevin Spacey. Certainly one to look forward to.

One of the most interesting story lines of the Fall movie season has got to be The Box. The film not only tells the story of a tricky moral dilemma faced by the protagonists, but it also makes you contemplate your own moral standing. When asked which is more important, life or money, most of us will say the former without even batting an eyelid. But what if a deadly box that produces one million dollars every time you pressed its button was placed right under your nose? Would you still press it knowing that a random stranger somewhere else in the world will die as a result? I’m sure the thought of never slaving at a dull job ever again will entice more people than we’d like to think.

Last, but certainly not least are the release of this seasons three major disaster movies. The Road and 2012 sound most promising, the former featuring superb performances by Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron. Check out the official trailer here. Roland Emerich’s 2012 is set to be as epic as the disastrous events it purports to portray. If the full length movie is anything like its trailer, then audiences can truly look forward to some breathtaking scenes of Earth’s systematic demise.

Worth mentioning too is a new Vince Vaughn comedy, Couples Retreat, as well as the hilarious disaster comedy Zombieland starring Woody Harrelson; two films guaranteed to make you chuckle. And then there’s Guy Richie’s new movie based on the classic detective story, Sherlock Holmes that’s set to cause a stir in the movie world as well as the new Coen borthers movie, A Serious Man. The Coen brothers have made some truly great films in the past, including Burn After Reading and No Country for Old Men, so this new movie is certainly being waited upon with great anticipation.

Wow, with so many great films coming out this season, it’s almost impossible to decide which ones to go see first. There’s definitely something for everyone, so make sure to take a big portion of popcorn and a whole lot of enthusiasm into the cinema with you this fall.
