Gambling, Wine & Hip Hop: New Bar Openings in Shanghai This March

There are lots of new bars in Shanghai to check out during the month of March. Some have already opened, some are offering those cryptic “soft openings,” and some have yet to debut. Regardless, you’re bound to find a new favorite (or two) somewhere in the bunch.

1) The Wine Hub 酒谷View In Map

Yet another addition to the Shanghai wine bar scene, The Wine Hub is a quaint tasting place located in a cellar, which indicates the kind of atmosphere they’re going for. Unlike other wine places in town that focus on French or Chilean wines, however, this place is all about the West Coast of the United States. While they certainly offer different varieties, this is the place to go if you’re craving that Californian feel. Call about their free tastings in March.

2) OZNZView In Map
From the guys who brought you Half, Dada, and the love-it-or-hate-it C’s, OZNZ aims to be a mix of all those bars and more. Cheap drinks, cheap food, DJ’s, and live music are there to draw in the crowds. What will keep them there, though, is probably the abundance of cheap drinks, Wiis, drinking games, and board games that are available. Oh, and did we mention cheap drinks (15 RMB beer, 20 RMB liquor)?

3) Lotus 莲View In Map

Formerly home to the infamous Bling, Lotus bills itself as a high end dance club. Don’t think you know what you’re getting yourself into if you’ve been to Bling before, because the whole building has been renovated to the point where it’s virtually unrecognizable. The standard mix of local and international DJ’s play everything from hip hop to techno, so if you want to enjoy a (relatively) quiet cocktail, you better get here early. With its two floors and three outdoor terraces, this will probably become the place to go when the weather warms up.

Add: Lane 66, Danshui Lu, near Jinling Lu, Shanghai

4) The CamelView In Map

Although you may think that Shanghai needs another sports bar like you need a hole in your head, The Camel manages to make its mark in the overcrowded jock scene. While the requisite big screen TV’s and pub food remain intact, the spacious atmosphere and decent happy hour makes it worth a trip. One minor quibble – for a sports bar, the pool table (which, in reality, is about a third the size of a normal pool table) leaves something to be desired.

1 Yueyang Lu, near Dongping Lu, Shanghai
地址:上海市岳阳路1号, 近东平路
Tel: 021 6437 9446
Open: 16:00-late

5) Game BlingView In Map
From the people who brought you the ever popular Bar Rouge, this Chinese club’s gimmick is “gambling” – but you know, the fake kind, since it’s illegal in this country. Although they’re technically open now (girls get a free cocktail before midnight), their “grand opening” doesn’t happen until March 27th at 9:00pm. To get on the list for the invite-only activities that occur earlier in the night, become a Game Bling member (on their website). Expect KTV, VIP rooms, an open air bar, and lots of, um, gambling.
